Electric Marine Loading Arm actuators for efficient port terminals.
⇢ MAKING PORT TERMINALS MORE EFFICIENT
Electric Marine
Loading Arms.
Marine loading arms (MLAs) are used globally in ports to load and unload liquid cargo, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2). These MLAs must be reliable, secure, user-friendly, and possess a low total cost of ownership (TCO).
Traditionally designed with hydraulic actuators, these MLAs can now be electrified using Cascade’s actuators.
Fit-for-function
The conventional 3-degree maneuvering of the arm (inboard arm luffing, outboard arm luffing, and slewing) can be directly replaced by Cascade actuators, effectively making the arm’s maneuvering fully electric.
ERS
The emergency release system (ERS) quickly shuts off the flow and detaches from the ship in the event of an emergency or extreme ship motion. This critical safety system is available from Cascade as a fully electrified solution.
QCDC
An electric quick-connect/disconnect coupling (QCDC) system is available using Cascade actuators.
Why go electric?
Moving from hydraulic to electric actuators has several important advantages for terminal operators.
Enhanced reliability: Hydraulic systems comprise numerous components, including pumps, valves, and high-pressure tubing. A malfunction in any of these components frequently results in extended downtime.
Precision and smoothness: The precise position accuracy of electric actuators ensure a precise and smooth movement of the arm, facilitating a seamless and efficient mating process with the ship.
Environmentally friendly: The toxicity and high pressure of hydraulic oil create a hazardous, noisy work environment. Electric actuators have none of these disadvantages and eliminates risk of oil spill damaging marine life.
Reduced footprint: A hydraulic system generally necessitates a substantial pump and a backup pressurized accumulator tank for the Emergency Release System (ERS). With electric actuators, these components can be replaced with a compact Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) as a backup for the ERS in the event of a power outage.
Smoother operation: precise electric actuators mean a precise and smooth movement of the arm, making it easier to mate the arm to the ship.
Autonomous-ready: As technology advances, an electric MLA is ideally equipped for remote or autonomous operation.
